reclaimed of door county

background

This project was a collaboration of two strangers becoming instant soul sisters on the behalf of a neglected garden. The space needed to serve as the outdoor welcome for a fabulous exterior and interior renovation of the now very popular consignment store, Reclaimed of Door County, in Ephraim.

Reclaimed sits on a highly visible corner in Ephraim. The building itself had gone through a major renovation by Fleetwood Builders to achieve its new urban farmhouse look. The space inside was charming and suited the new owners perfectly. The personality of the shopkeeper is evident everywhere – from the white walls used for a clean backdrop to the staged vignettes that allow her patrons to visualize her items in their own homes.

The outside? Not so much.

The exterior garden was a sad weedy mess full of lava rocks. It could not have been more different from the new owner and her vibrant personality, and it had to be renovated to allow patrons a glimpse of what was in store for them inside. First steps involved cleaning up and clearing out of the old landscaping and some new hardscaping done by a local man to give us the bones for what would become the new garden space. New soil was brought in for planting. A quintessential farmhouse picket fence was built and painted on either side of the entry walk to frame the area as well as delineate it as the true entry to the building.

Working closely with the shopkeeper, a list of favorite plants that will stand up to Door County’s weather, was picked and sourced from local vendors. A mix of perennial shade plants for under the crab tree was picked for beauty, but also for the fact that they would multiply through the year. The sunny fence gardens were planted with a mix of perennials and annuals to provide spring through fall color.

The garden now speaks to the building, and, more importantly, the personality of the owner. Captivating, colorful flowers greet patrons throughout the summer and fall and reflect the magical appeal of Door County. Sweet peas and clematis tumble over the fence posts, cosmos and daisies offer up many smiles, and old fashioned favorites remind patrons of gardens from their pasts. The gardens now truly set the stage for the shopping experience to be found inside.

Like the building itself, the gardens have been Reclaimed.
